In this video, i have demonstrated Caching DNS Configuration and Troubleshooting. I’ve gone through every component of the Caching-Only DNS Server Configuration, including the setup requirements, design and deployments.
DNS servers are divided into three categories: primary, secondary, and caching-only. In this video, we’ll look at how to configure caching DNS servers. The default mode for the Linux DNS Server is caching DNS. The DNS Service on the System will operate as a caching DNS Server if we simply start it. When we don’t require the DNS server to host any authoritative zones, we can set it up as Caching-Only DNS. We can set up a Caching DNS Server if we only need a DNS Server for name resolution.
The caching DNS Server will receive any query from clients and will cache the result on the DNS cache, and it always replies from the cache. All DNS Servers reply from the cache by default, however caching DNS is exclusive for this reason. When the DNS cache expires, we must flush the cache to reflect the most recent DNS record modifications. Otherwise, the DNS cache will return obsolete values. Caching-Only DNS can be configured as a Forwarding DNS also, in which case it will accept client DNS queries and, rather than travelling to the internet for name resolution, will forward the queries to the Upstream DNS Server. However, the primary goal of caching will remain the same.
